Yi is the first Hospice West Auckland nurse to complete the progression pathway from Specialist Palliative Care Nurse to Clinical Nurse Specialist, and has been successful in her promotion to a CNS clinical leadership role. She is also currently studying for her Master of Nursing.
The nurse progression pathway, a clinically focused competency-based programme, signifies the additional experience Yi has obtained in palliative care as well as the extra study and qualifications gained. A Specialist Palliative Care Nurse, for example, may have one to two years’ experience in palliative care. In contrast, a Clinical Nurse Specialist has at least five years’ clinical experience and holds a post-graduate nursing qualification.
As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Yi now manages patients requiring complex care encompassing physical nursing assessments as well as psychosocial assessments. She can also use her experience and skills to lead the Hospice team, such as overseeing junior nurses and identifying opportunities for improvement.
Yi has been appointed the new Lead of Korowai Care, Hospice West Auckland’s programme that delivers short-term enhanced levels of extended care to support patients at home, helping to avoid a hospital or hospice in-patient unit admission. Yi’s experience will be invaluable in leading the Korowai Care team and collaborating with other community providers to continue the success of this essential service for West Aucklanders.
At Hospice West Auckland, nurses are highly respected, valued and supported. Yi is a wonderful example of the support and opportunities provided for professional development, helping to elevate her career.
