National Volunteer Week at Hospice West Auckland 2016

June 19 - 25 is National Volunteer Week. New Zealand was ranked as the third most charitable country in 2015's World Giving Index, which shows 45% of New Zealanders volunteering time. It's part of who Kiwis are.

Hospice West Auckland has a strong base of dedicated volunteers helping in a number of roles, from working in Hospice Shops to helping patients and families.

Volunteer Services Manager Sarah Jeffs says the giving nature of the volunteers she works with is a constant lesson. "I'm frequently amazed by the capacity of our volunteers to give, and their willingness to help. They're a crucial part of the fabric of our organisation and we're very grateful for their energy and dedication."

At the busy Henderson Hospice Shop, passionate volunteers are at the heart of things. Brooke Schmallkuchen says she volunteers for Hospice West Auckland as a way to give back.

"My grandfather became terminally ill in 2014 and Hospice West Auckland was an incredible support to him and my family. The time and resources given to my grandfather to make him as comfortable as possible were amazing. I want to help Hospice West Auckland to raise as much money as they can so they can continue to help other people and their families going through similar experiences."
